DRUMS ALIVE

Drums Alive

Wednesday, October 10th was a fun day. On that day the TCLMH Physical Therapy department (PT) hosted some very special out-of-town guests in recognition of National Physical Therapy Month. Physical Therapy, like all fields in the medical world, is always changing to advance their practice with new and better ways to treat our customers to achieve better outcomes.

KJ Grimmett, CPTA, and her two assistants, Lydia Grimmett and Julie Tegethoff, spent two hours in the morning with our PT department staff educating them on a new PT exercise activity that’s new to this country. It’s called Drums Alive. KJ is a certified master trainer, a personal trainer, and leader for Drums Alive.

Studies have found numerous physiological benefits that include:

1. Boosts immune system and alters stress response.

2. Improves synchronization of the brain’s two hemispheres.

3. It’s an aerobic activity.

4. Stimulates alpha waves that create euphoria and reduces stress.

5. Increases lymphocyte activated killer cells that improves the bodies ability to fight cancer.

Other noted benefits are that…

· ...it’s a shared good experience that decreases isolation and loneliness.

· ...it decreases one-sided neglect (not using one side of the body).

· ...it decreases frozen muscles in Parkinson’s disease.

· ...it also improves balance.

...it encourages use of bilateral upper and lower extremities (both arms and legs).

In Asia and Europe, Drums Alive is more common and has been used for quite some time.

One Drums Alive participant  turned 95 the next day. She spent her birthday out with family. That Thursday afternoon, I spoke with her daughter-in-law and asked if she told them about the Drums Alive activity she went to. With a puzzled look on her face she replied, “Well, she told me she went to a rock-and-roll concert and that it was a lot of fun!”

Thanks to everyone who came to “play” with us in the gym, and a special thanks to Mr. Desormiers for letting us use the gym and other requested items.

Also, a very special thanks to our professional Physical Therapy staff. You all are so good at what you do, and this community is blessed to have such gifted and compassionate therapists who strive to be on the cutting edge in their field.

On that Wednesday afternoon, your physical therapists put their morning’s education to work for our community. Under KJ’s leadership, our PT department engaged a large group in the Drums Alive activity at the WaKeeney Grade School gym. It was a lot of moving, dancing, rhythm, and fun!
